Case Studies

Glencore DRC

Mining in the DRC, cobalt in particular, has a backdrop of perceptions around human rights issues. Industrial mines, therefore, need to communicate a clear narrative around responsible mining, their value proposition to the economy of the host country and broader supply chain, the upliftment of neighbouring communities, and their contribution to formalising artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), while offering alternative livelihoods for ASMs.

Communication outputs

Working with Glencore DRC and Glencore Copper Africa, R&A strives to be both responsive and proactive in providing support to the company through our range of services, while being mindful of the role played by the internal communication departments at the two assets and the opportunity to contribute to development of communications staff. In essence, the support offered includes the following:

  • Communication strategy development and planning for internal and external communication, crisis communication, social media and media relations
  • Content development
  • Design and animation
  • Publication writing, editing and design
  • Concept development
  • Quality assurance / editing and proofreading
Outcomes

Internal communication support has assisted business change initiatives, concept and storyline development for stakeholder campaigns, day-to-day content and design for site-specific communication.
Social media followers for the two DRC assets have grown exponentially and there has been an evolution in the quality, reach and relevance of content for these audiences.

The company narrative is conveyed externally through additional channels such as a schools poster series; localised web content; and media coverage.
